COUNSELLING – IS IT FOR ME? Are you wondering what this counselling business is?Maybe
someone has suggested that it might be a good idea for you to talk to a
counsellor. Or maybe you’re going through a bad patch and feel you need
to try and sort your head out a bit.
But, especially if you’ve never done this sort of thing before, it might feel rather weird or difficult step to take.
Below are a few answers to some questions you might have. But the best thing is probably to come and suss us out yourself. Give us a ring, or send us an email or text, or drop in and ask for an appointment to discuss counselling. (There is usually a waiting list, so it may take a couple of weeks to get an appointment.) We have counselling appointments most week-days from 9.30 till 5.30 and till 7pm on Thursdays. WE WILL:- Answer your questions - give you a chance to talk about any worries about coming here - encourage you to tell us what you want to about yourself - tell you if and how we think we can help WE WON’T:- tell you what to do or judge you - tell your friends or family that you’ve come
-
put pressure on you to come back if you don’t want to
LASTLY, if someone is persuading you or pressurising you, DON’T COME! Counselling won’t be any use to you unless you’ve decided you want to try it. You’re in charge of your life! YOU CAN CONTACT THE COUNSELLING TEAM on the Youth Start phone line, address or email. Frequently Asked Questions:CAN MY FRIEND COME WITH ME?Yes, our waiting room has a radio, magazines and drinks available IS
IT FREE?
Yes WHAT IS COUNSELLING?A safe space to talk to someone trained outside of your normal life about your thoughts and feelings. We will try to help you to make sense of them and support you in changes you want to make. HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED IT?You might not know for sure, but if you think it might help, you’re welcome to give it a try CAN I TALK ABOUT ANYTHING?Anything at all. You decide what you want to talk about and we listen and try to understand what it is like to be you. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?It varies. We usually suggest coming for 3 or 4 sessions to start with and then we can decide together about continuing or try something different. Each session is 50 minutes at a time that suits us both.
IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?Very. We’ll ask for your first name, date of birth and for a contact number. We do not talk about you to anyone outside Youth Start. If your family or anyone asks us if you’d been here, even, we wouldn’t tell them. In an emergency when we were really worried about your safety, we may have to break confidentiality – this is extremely rare and will be clearly explained before you start.
